Workflow sketch. Implementation choices and evaluation boundaries are explained below.

Choose a reference configuration

A Mac Studio can put a substantial unified-memory pool into a compact workstation. That makes it worth evaluating for local inference, especially when the business already owns the machine. Unified memory is shared by the operating system, applications, model weights, and context cache; a nominal memory capacity is not a guaranteed model allowance.

Use a specific reference profile, such as a 2023 Mac Studio M2 Max with 64 GB or M2 Ultra with 128 GB. Record the chip, GPU configuration, memory, macOS release, runtime version, and available storage. These are reference configurations. HoofLabs’ lightweight local test environment is an M2 Pro Mac with 16 GB; it is not a Mac Studio benchmark.

Establish a local endpoint

Ollama provides a straightforward starting point for a bounded business task. Follow its current macOS installation instructions, then download the model explicitly. Keep the service on loopback during the first evaluation.

ollama pull qwen3:4b
ollama run qwen3:4b
ollama ps

To restrict Ollama to local features, set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 in its server environment and restart it using the platform-specific instructions in the FAQ. Setting an environment variable in a separate terminal does not retroactively change an already-running application.

Test the HTTP path independently of a user interface:

curl http://127.0.0.1:11434/api/chat -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{"model":"qwen3:4b","stream":false,"think":false,"messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Summarise: the synthetic packing checklist needs review on Friday."}]}'

Start with one business task

Use a representative but non-sensitive input set: short operational notes, enquiry classification, or a defined extraction schema. The Local Notes Assistant supplies a complete Python example with input limits, output validation, and a model-free fixture mode.

Record cold-start and warm response time separately. Check output quality before comparing speed. A service that responds rapidly but invents action owners has failed the notes task. Test long inputs, missing information, and instructions embedded inside the source text.

Make model fit an observed result

Begin with a smaller quantised model and increase complexity only when evaluation reveals a concrete need. Monitor ollama ps, system memory pressure, and the actual response path. Context length and concurrent requests can increase memory demand substantially beyond the weight file.

MLX-LM offers another Apple-silicon path, including fine-tuning. Treat an Ollama-versus-MLX comparison as a controlled experiment: use equivalent models, prompts, quantisation, context, and sampling. A change in several variables cannot establish which runtime caused a difference.

Plan the operating routine

Document who starts the service after restart, applies runtime updates, checks disk growth, and restores the previous model. Keep downloaded models and application configuration separate from business documents. Pin a model revision or digest for evaluation and retain the preceding working configuration.

A shared team service needs authentication, access controls, bounded concurrency, logs, and an incident owner. Do not expose the raw local endpoint to the internet. See team serving before moving beyond the workstation.

Evaluate cost and readiness

Include hardware amortisation where relevant, power, administration, model downloads, and review effort. Compare utilisation scenarios rather than assuming an always-on workstation is economical for every workload. Define acceptable quality and latency, then measure cost per accepted task.

Before rollout, confirm that the owner can reproduce the setup, identify a failed response, recover after restart, and replace the model without losing the workflow configuration.
